Andy Roddick Finds Humor in Daniil Medvedev's US Open Outburst

Aug 26 2025

Daniil Medvedev's emotional display at the 2025 US Open has sparked a range of reactions, with Andy Roddick finding humor in the situation. “I like it when people lose it,” Roddick remarked on his podcast, “Served,” on August 25. “I generally tend not to change the channel when people lose it.”

Medvedev, 29, unleashed a tirade during his first-round match against Benjamin Bonzi on August 24, causing a six-minute delay as he clashed with chair umpire Greg Allensworth and engaged the crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The incident escalated when Bonzi was granted a second serve after a photographer inadvertently wandered onto the court. Ultimately, Bonzi triumphed in a five-set match, marking another disappointing chapter for Medvedev, the former world No. 1 and 2021 US Open champion.

“He’s got some searching to do,” Roddick noted, reflecting on Medvedev's struggles. “He’s in a place he hasn’t been in seven or eight years.” Roddick humorously added, “Medvedev has beaten everyone on Earth for a long time, except Bonzi. Can’t beat Bonzi.”

This loss follows Bonzi's earlier victory over Medvedev in the first round of Wimbledon just months prior.

While Roddick chuckled at Medvedev's antics, not all tennis figures shared his amusement. Boris Becker, a six-time major champion, reacted to footage of Medvedev smashing his rackets post-match. “We call this ‘public meltdown,’” Becker posted on X. “I think he needs professional help?!?”

Patrick McEnroe, ESPN analyst and former pro, echoed Becker's sentiment, suggesting that “Medvedev needs to take the rest of the year off.”

After the match, Medvedev attempted to clarify his outburst. “I was not upset with the photographer,” he explained to reporters. “I was upset with the decision. The delay from the photographer was probably four seconds and a half. I’m not sure it’s enough for a [first] serve.”

Medvedev insisted that the crowd's reaction was spontaneous and not incited by him. “I didn’t do anything,” he stated. “The crowd did what they did without me asking them too much, and it was fun to witness.”
