Fans of college football are buzzing with excitement as the new season unfolds, particularly supporters of the University of Michigan. The Wolverines have secured a gem in Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top recruit for the class of 2025, who made a striking debut as starting quarterback in a 34-17 victory against the New Mexico Lobos at Michigan Stadium on August 30, 2025.

Since that game, Underwood has captured the attention of sports enthusiasts nationwide. Notably, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy lauded him during the September 6, 2025 episode of Big Noon Kickoff. “I’ve sat with Urban [Meyer], I’ve sat with all the quarterbacks, they’re drooling about this guy, Bryce Underwood,” Portnoy remarked, emphasizing the buzz surrounding the young athlete. “They can’t believe what they’re seeing on tape. He’s like the supernova.”

Portnoy further expressed his hopes for Underwood’s performance, stating, “I hope they use his legs. He didn’t run at all last week. I think they’re saving it for this week. I think he might be the single best freshman ever in college football. I like Michigan tonight.”

Underwood’s journey to Michigan is as impressive as his on-field performance. A graduate of Belleville High School, located just under 30 minutes from Michigan Stadium, he amassed 1,488 passing yards and an astounding 152 touchdowns while leading his team to two state championships with a record of 50-4.

Initially committed to LSU, Underwood’s decision shifted after a recruitment effort that included a call from Michigan alum Tom Brady. Reflecting on that moment during a December 2024 appearance on the “Kickin it with Dee” podcast, he admitted, “It caught me off guard, not gonna lie. I didn’t expect it. Next thing I know my phone ringing with a 305 number.” While he kept the details of their conversation private, it clearly influenced his choice to remain in his home state.

Entering college as the top recruit in the nation, Underwood not only switched allegiance from LSU to Michigan but also became the highest-rated offensive recruit in the program’s history. His commitment significantly bolstered Michigan’s recruiting class, elevating it to No. 14 overall.

Underwood’s rise began in 2021 when he threw for 2,888 yards and 39 touchdowns as a freshman. His talent earned him the title of Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year in 2023 during his junior year.
As the season kicks off, Underwood’s commitment to Michigan’s football program is evident. In an interview with ESPN published on September 4, 2025, head coach Sherrone Moore shared that he found Underwood working out late into the night—at times as late as 2 a.m. Upon discovering that Underwood was using the school’s indoor practice facility to refine his passing skills, Moore advised him, “You gotta sleep.”
