Burrito-Loving Dog Treks Five Miles Overnight Without Owner for Free Treat
A Great Pyrenees named Max made headlines after embarking on a five-mile trek to a convenience store in Langford, South Dakota, all in pursuit of a breakfast burrito. The four-year-old canine slipped out of his home late at night, driven by a craving that had clearly left an impression on him from a previous visit.

At 11:39 PM, while the household was settling down, Max seized the opportunity to escape. His owners, Sara and Nathan Olson, were unaware of his absence until morning. “We didn’t realize it until the next morning,” Sara recounted, explaining how their daughter, Emily, inadvertently opened the garage door, allowing Max to slip out.
When Sara awoke, her phone buzzed with alerts from Max’s GPS trackers—two devices strapped to him due to the rugged terrain. “I woke up in the morning and I see alert after alert of where Max is,” she said, piecing together his late-night adventure. “It looked like he left around 11:39 at night.”

Max’s journey wasn’t a simple path; while the drive to town spans about seven miles, he opted for a shortcut through fields, arriving at the store after two hours. “For him to cut through the country, it’s like five miles,” Sara explained. “He kind of went at a diagonal up through the land.”
Upon reaching the convenience store, Max found himself waiting outside for five hours, only to discover that the store was still closed when he arrived. “He had waited there at the C-store for five hours and then he walked over to Emily’s boyfriend’s house,” Sara noted, highlighting the dog’s remarkable sense of smell. “What’s funny about that is that he’s never been to her boyfriend’s house.”

Despite his efforts, Max did not secure his coveted breakfast burrito that day. In response to his adventurous spirit, the Olson family has since taken measures to keep him satisfied at home. “We have since started feeding him breakfast burritos at home because we’re hoping that will dissuade him from walking five miles through the countryside to go get his own breakfast burrito,” Sara shared.
Max was adopted by the Olson family two years ago after being rescued as a stray by family friends. “He is just the greatest dog,” Sara expressed. “He is the first dog that I ever have felt like he is truly grateful to live with us.”
