CBS Los Angeles Launches Innovative AR/VR Immersive Studio

Jun 11 2025

CBS Los Angeles is set to revolutionize the way news is presented with the launch of its new augmented and virtual reality immersive studio on June 11. This cutting-edge facility aims to transform traditional storytelling by immersing viewers directly into the narrative.

"This week, we're launching our AR/VR Studio, the first of its kind in Southern California," stated Tim Wieland, regional president and general manager. "Storytelling is at the core of everything we do here, and that includes weather." The studio will allow meteorologists to create realistic 3D weather visuals, enhancing the viewer's understanding of complex weather patterns.

Southern California's diverse microclimates present unique challenges for weather reporting. The new studio provides a dynamic platform for meteorologists to illustrate these variations effectively. "This allows us to literally walk through communities and neighborhoods and show differences in the weather at different times of day," Wieland added, emphasizing the studio's potential to engage audiences more deeply.

The technology behind this innovative studio is based on a proprietary blueprint developed by CBS Bay Area, which is being rolled out across CBS stations and national broadcasts. This initiative reflects CBS's commitment to delivering high-quality news content that resonates with viewers.

Chelsea Hylton, a web producer for CBS Los Angeles, brings her expertise to the team. An Inglewood native with a master's degree from USC, Hylton covers local breaking news across Southern California. Her previous experience includes roles at NBC LA, Telemundo 52, The Los Angeles Times, and KOMO 4 News in Seattle, showcasing her extensive background in journalism.
