Chris Fowler Addresses Voice Criticism During Monday Night Football

Sep 17 2025

Chris Fowler, the voice behind ESPN's Monday Night Football, took to Instagram to address concerns regarding his vocal performance during the game on September 15. “For those who are concerned, I feel great,” he stated, revealing that a recent sinus infection had impacted his voice. “I’m healthy now, but vocal recovery is lagging behind and that frustrates me.”

Fowler, 63, acknowledged that his voice was “wearing out late in the game,” a fact that did not go unnoticed by viewers. The game featured the Los Angeles Chargers facing off against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, with Fowler joined by analysts Dan Orlovsky and Louis Riddick.

The Chargers emerged victorious with a score of 20-9. Fowler's gravelly voice became a topic of conversation among fans, with one viewer humorously comparing it to “an 80-year-old retiree who’s been sitting at a slot machine sucking down 3 packs of cigarettes for multiple days in a row.”

Another fan chimed in, suggesting, “Someone get Chris Fowler a lozenge or two or some tea because his voice is going through it.” While some comments were lighthearted, others expressed concern for Fowler’s well-being. “It’s too bad that ESPN doesn’t have any other announcers on staff,” one viewer remarked, criticizing the network for allowing him to call the game while unwell.

Another echoed this sentiment, stating, “ESPN, please give Chris Fowler a night off. We don’t need to hear his raspy voice for 3 hours. He’s clearly sick and needs some rest.”

Sports Illustrated reporter Jimmy Traina also weighed in on the situation via social media, describing the combination of poor audio and Fowler’s compromised voice as “absolutely atrocious.”

Despite the challenges, Fowler expressed gratitude for his colleagues in the booth. He shared his appreciation for Orlovsky and Riddick, stating, “Truly love sharing a broadcast, sharing time and meals with these guys and the rest of our team for the MNF mini-package.” He emphasized their professionalism and passion for football, noting that he learns from them every time they work together.

Fowler's commitment to his role remains evident as he continues to navigate the demands of broadcasting while recovering from his recent illness.
