Collin Morikawa Opens Up About the Mental Struggles of Golfing

Aug 13 2025

Collin Morikawa, a prominent figure in professional golf, recently shared his thoughts on the mental challenges that accompany a series of poor performances on the course. The 28-year-old golfer revealed that even elite athletes find it difficult to disconnect from their sport when faced with adversity.

In a candid conversation, Morikawa expressed, “Golf is a big part of my life and who I am. When it’s going great, it’s very easy to be able to separate yourself. But when it’s not going as well, your mind is constantly thinking about golf.” He elaborated on the relentless pursuit of improvement, stating, “How do I keep getting better? That’s what we’re all trying to accomplish: getting better every single day.”

As a two-time major champion on the PGA TOUR, Morikawa emphasized the unique mental fortitude required in golf compared to other sports. “It takes a toll out of you,” he noted, highlighting the physical and psychological stress that golfers endure. “We are trying to perfect this game, essentially, that we can’t perfect. There’s always going to be struggles that you have to maintain and balance.”

To navigate these challenges, Morikawa has developed effective time management skills. “As anyone successful in a job, you have to be really, really good with your time,” he explained. “You’re able to get a lot done if you put your mind to it in a short period. That’s the most important thing.”

Morikawa also acknowledged the significant role his wife, Katherine, plays in supporting his mental well-being. Married in November 2022, Katherine is a marathon runner and former golfer. “I wouldn’t say it’s a necessity for everyone, but it’s a necessity for me,” he remarked. “I’m so proud of her. The motivation she gives me with what she does with her running pushes me every day to get better.”

He continued, “It’s lucky to have your best friend by your side and be able to go out and enjoy life, travel the world, see new places and do what I love.” Morikawa expressed gratitude for Katherine’s sacrifices, acknowledging how her support has been instrumental in his journey.

Currently, Morikawa is competing in the FedExCup Playoffs at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Fans can catch him and the top 50 golfers on the PGA TOUR at the BMW Championship from August 14 through August 17 on various broadcasting platforms.
