Colonial Theatre Offers Free Classic Films This Holiday Weekend

The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville opens its doors this weekend, inviting film enthusiasts to experience classic movies free of charge. This initiative is part of a national effort aimed at revitalizing independent cinemas.

Established in 1902, the Colonial is among five theaters across the country participating in Pluto TV's Free Movie Weekend, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

"Join us for screenings of 'Hook,' 'Labyrinth,' 'Jumanji,' or 'The Phoenician Scheme,' all at no cost, thanks to Pluto TV," stated Bob Trate, the theater's programming director.

The event aims to encourage audiences to return to independent and family-owned theaters, which are still navigating the aftermath of the pandemic.

"It's intriguing that a streaming service like Pluto TV is motivating people to step away from their screens and rediscover the magic of cinema in a theater setting," Trate remarked.

In addition to free admission, attendees will receive complimentary bags of popcorn—one for the show and another to take home—along with themed fireworks glasses.

"The beauty of watching a movie in a theater is the escape it provides from everyday life," Trate added. "For 90 minutes to two hours, you immerse yourself in the story."

This free movie weekend also serves as a precursor to Blobfest, the theater's annual celebration of the 1958 sci-fi classic "The Blob," filmed on-site. Festival-goers will reenact the iconic scene where panicked moviegoers flee the theater.

"This year, we’re excited to introduce a new kids' zone, sponsored by PECO," said Jennifer Carlson, executive director of the Colonial Theatre.

PECO is also backing screenings of "La Masa Devoradora," the Spanish adaptation of "The Blob."

Those wishing to attend Pluto TV's Free Movie Weekend can reserve tickets through the theater's website or collect them at the box office.

Pluto TV operates under Paramount Global, which oversees various media properties.
