“Dhaba on Devon Avenue” Finally Takes the Stage at Writers Theatre
“Dhaba on Devon Avenue” has made its long-anticipated debut at Writers Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois, five years after its original launch date was set.
This poignant play centers around a family-run restaurant located on Chicago's Devon Avenue, a vibrant hub for the city's Indian community.
Actress Arya Daire, who has personal ties to the area, reflects on her experiences. “I think the story of this play is closest to my family than anything else I've ever done,” she remarked.
The term “Dhaba” refers not only to the restaurant featured in the narrative but also to a type of roadside eatery found in India. The plot follows the founder of this establishment, yet Daire emphasizes that the underlying themes resonate universally. Director Chay Yew echoes this sentiment.
“I think ultimately it's about change,” Yew stated. “Can we hold onto it, can we allow it to manifest and evolve? We're always saying we can change, but when it comes time to do it…”
Change has significantly influenced the production itself. Initially slated for a 2020 premiere, the play faced cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, five years later, a collaboration between Timeline and Writers Theatre has brought it to fruition.
“I think COVID was a flash point for all of us, so the play is richer emotionally,” Yew added.
Daire shared her thoughts on the importance of sharing stories: “You start to make choices and you identify with them. And if you don't get to share it, you feel incomplete.”
Now, audiences from diverse backgrounds can finally engage with this heartfelt narrative.
“Dhaba on Devon Avenue” will be performed at Writers Theatre until July 27.
