Disney to Close Frontierland for New Attraction: Piston Peak National Park

Fans of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom have a limited window to experience the current Frontierland, with just 33 days remaining before significant changes take place.

On Tuesday, Disney confirmed that the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will cease operations on July 7. This closure marks the beginning of a transformation into “Piston Peak National Park,” a new attraction themed around the Disney and Pixar “Cars” franchise.

The upcoming attraction promises an immersive experience, described by the Disney Parks Blog as “an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers, and impressive geysers.” While fictional, Piston Peak draws inspiration from the Rocky Mountain region and the rich history of the American Frontier and its national parks.

Earlier this year, in March, details about the off-road vehicles that will feature in this nearly 54-year-old theme park were unveiled. The anticipation is palpable among fans, with one Facebook user expressing enthusiasm for the incorporation of new water features to maintain the area’s original vibe.

However, not all feedback has been positive. Some visitors are expressing their discontent with the changes. “No thanks,” one individual commented in response to the announcement. “I would rather have RoA,” referring to the Rivers of America.

In addition to the Frontierland overhaul, Imagineers are also set to create the first-ever land dedicated to Disney villains. This new area will feature “two major attractions, dining, and shopping all on an incredibly twisted grand scale,” according to the Disney Parks Blog.

As these changes unfold, Walt Disney World is currently promoting its “Cool Kid Summer” specials. Additionally, Magic Kingdom is set to launch a new nighttime parade titled “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away” on July 20.
