Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to social media early Friday, July 25, to honor the legacy of Hulk Hogan, who passed away at the age of 71. The two wrestling legends shared a historic moment in the ring during their iconic match at WrestleMania 18 in 2002, a clash that fans still celebrate.
“Rest in Peace, Terry Bollea aka The Immortal Hulk Hogan,” Johnson wrote, posting a video montage of their memorable encounter. He reminisced about how Hogan was a childhood hero to countless fans, including himself. “In 1984, I gave you your ‘HULKSTER’ headband back in the locker room at Madison Square Garden,” he recalled, describing how he was the lucky kid who caught it when Hogan tossed it into the crowd during a match against Paul Orndorff.
Johnson continued, “You were so happy after the match because you told me that was your very last headband. You promised to get more made and give me one as a thank you gift.” This heartfelt exchange left a lasting impression on the young Johnson, who was just 12 years old at the time.
Fast forward to 2002, and Johnson found himself in the ring with Hogan, now a fellow superstar. “Just 17 years later, I’m standing in the middle of the ring facing you—one of my wrestling heroes,” he reflected. Their match was not just a contest; it was a defining moment in wrestling history.
“When you kicked out of my Rock Bottom finisher, the crowd went electric—all for you,” Johnson shared. He emphasized that while he may have been the one in the ring, the energy and excitement belonged to Hogan. “It takes two to tango, but that historic crowd reaction was all for you.”
Johnson acknowledged Hogan’s monumental impact on wrestling, stating, “You may have ‘passed the torch’ to me that night, but you sold out every arena and stadium across the country in your prime.” His words underscored Hogan’s status as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.

“From deep in my bones, and on behalf of this wild and crazy world of professional wrestling that we love, I say to you now, and forever… Thank you for the house, brother… Thank you for the house,” Johnson concluded.
Hogan’s passing was confirmed on Thursday, July 24, following a cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida. Reports indicated that he had been recovering from major heart surgery just weeks prior.
In a statement released by WWE, they expressed their sorrow over Hogan’s death: “WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends and fans.”
The wrestling community mourns the loss of a true icon whose influence will be felt for generations to come.
