New York City’s nightlife is evolving, showcasing an array of eccentric bars that push the boundaries of creativity. From turtle races to literary-themed cocktails, these five establishments are redefining what it means to enjoy a night out.

In Bedford-Stuyvesant, Turtles All the Way Down has become a local favorite since its 2017 opening. This dimly lit bar features monthly turtle races, where the beloved turtles Ja Rule and Vita compete for glory. “We started the races as a fun activity for our regulars,” said Brendan Rodriguez, the bar’s events manager. “Now, they’ve gained a following on social media.” The atmosphere is lively, with frozen coffee cocktails and affordable bites keeping patrons entertained between races.

Meanwhile, in Hell’s Kitchen, Miss Nellie’s offers a whimsical escape inspired by investigative reporter Nellie Bly. General manager Marisa Braat describes it as “a narrative,” where every detail contributes to a story celebrating adventure and femininity. The cocktails are as theatrical as the décor, with suitcase-shaken martinis and smoked Manhattans served in hollowed-out books. “Our spicy chicken bites have developed a cult following,” Braat noted, highlighting the bar’s unique take on comfort food.

Quick Eternity, located in the Seaport, channels the spirit of an old Cape Cod tavern. Opened in May, this bar features cocktails inspired by Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick.” Owner Bryan Schneider was inspired by the book’s depiction of an eccentric whaling tavern. “We wanted to create a space that resonates with fans of Melville,” he explained. The menu includes crab fritters and the signature “Quick Eternity” cocktail, made with Navy-strength gin and passionfruit.

Ridgewood’s Flying Fox Tavern combines horror themes with comfort food. Co-owner Tracy Bradbury wanted to fill the void left by the absence of horror-themed bars in NYC. “We provide a space for horror fans to enjoy good food and drinks,” she said. The bar is adorned with gothic chandeliers and eerie memorabilia, while the menu features vegan stuffed French toast and vampire-themed cocktails like the “Christopher Lee” margarita.

Finally, Sailor’s Choice offers a nautical experience just steps from Hudson Yards. Owned by brothers Miles and Alex Pincus, this bar features a retro fishing boat as its centerpiece. “I’ve loved boats since I was a kid,” Alex shared. The menu includes lobster BLTs and oysters, while drinks range from martinis to refreshing spritzes. The outdoor setting, complete with lemon-striped umbrellas, creates a perfect atmosphere for enjoying coastal favorites.

These five bars exemplify NYC's quirky nightlife, each offering a unique experience that goes beyond traditional drinking establishments. Whether you’re racing turtles or sipping literary cocktails, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant city.
