Fighting Tomcats Gear Up for Crucial Playoff Showdown
Long Island's Fighting Tomcats are on the brink of a playoff berth in the National Premier Soccer League, with their fate resting on a decisive match against New Haven United FC this Saturday at Hofstra University.
Head coach John Fitzgerald expressed confidence in his team, stating, “These guys have bought in.” The squad, currently holding a record of 2-3-4, must secure a victory at 7 p.m. to clinch their postseason opportunity.
“They come in, they train three nights a week, we train at nine o’clock at night… then they’re getting up for work the next day because we’re not paying them their full-time salaries,” Fitzgerald added, highlighting the dedication of his players.

For team captain Brian Saramago, a 26-year-old account manager from New Hyde Park, the chance to continue playing competitively is invaluable. “We just want to give it our all,” he remarked, noting that their previous encounters with New Haven—a 2-1 win and a 3-3 draw—have boosted team morale.
Despite being a newly formed team, Saramago emphasized the strong camaraderie that has developed among the players. “Sometimes after a hard day at work, you don’t really want to go to training, but then every time, I see everyone laughing and playing with each other,” he said. “That is why I think that this Saturday it’s going to be something special.”
“I know I don’t want it to be my last game with these guys,” he added, reflecting on the bond they’ve created in such a short time.

In a related event, Yankees and Mets legend Darryl Strawberry will be in Smithtown on Saturday afternoon for the Subway Series at Bull Smith’s Tavern. The former outfielder is scheduled for meet and greets at 4:10 p.m., along with raffles for attendees.
Additionally, the Southampton Firecracker Run is set to take place Sunday morning, rain or shine. Both the 8K and 3-mile runs will kick off at 7:30 a.m. in Agawam Park at 25 Pond Lane, Southampton.
