Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash as Photo with 'Sugar Daddy' Alex Soros Goes Viral

Jan 23 2026

California Governor Gavin Newsom found himself at the center of controversy this week as a photo of him with billionaire Alex Soros circulated widely online. The image, taken during the World Economic Forum in Davos, sparked criticism amid Newsom's recent remarks about world leaders' responses to President Donald Trump.

While addressing the conference, Newsom condemned foreign leaders for "rolling over" in the face of Trump's influence. However, his own association with Soros, the son of prominent philanthropist George Soros, drew sharp rebuke from various political figures. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not hold back, likening Newsom to a character from a film and suggesting that he was out of touch with economic realities.

"Governor Newsom, who strikes me as Patrick Bateman meets Sparkle Beach Ken, may be the only Californian who knows less about economics than Kamala Harris," Bessent remarked during a press conference. He continued to criticize Newsom's lavish lifestyle, recalling how the governor dined at exclusive restaurants while enforcing strict lockdown measures in California.

Newsom's comments about world leaders prompted further scrutiny when he suggested they should have brought "kneepads" to Davos for their interactions with Trump. This statement was overshadowed by the viral photo shared by Alex Soros, who praised Newsom's stance against appeasement towards the Trump administration.

"Great catching up with the real star of the 2026 World Economic Forum, my friend Gavin Newsom," Soros wrote alongside the image. His caption emphasized the need for world leaders to stand firm against Trump, a sentiment that resonated with some but drew ire from critics.

In response to the photo, Senator Ted Cruz took to social media to share an altered version depicting Newsom in a NASCAR uniform adorned with sponsorship logos for Soros and the Chinese Communist Party. "Fixed it for you," Cruz quipped, highlighting the perceived absurdity of Newsom's situation.

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers chimed in, dismissing Newsom's ambitions and suggesting that his association with Soros was indicative of his political aspirations. "Gavin Newscum auditioning to be Alex Soros’ next sugar baby is a waste of time," she stated.

Critics continued to voice their opinions, with Tim Miller, a podcast host and analyst, calling for action against Soros' social media presence. Meanwhile, Tony Shaffer, president of the London Center for Policy Research, characterized Newsom as a figure aligned with globalist agendas.

Newsom's accusations against the Trump administration regarding his speaking opportunities at the USA House were met with skepticism from the White House. Spokesperson Anna Kelly remarked that few in Davos recognized Newsom or understood his presence there amidst California's ongoing challenges.

Notably, Alex Soros has previously supported Newsom financially, contributing approximately $70,000 to his political endeavors. Their relationship has been publicly documented through various social media posts where Soros has praised Newsom's leadership on issues like climate change.

As the fallout from this incident continues, it remains to be seen how this will impact Newsom's political future and public perception in California and beyond.
