Gonsolin Shines in Return as Dodgers Crush Marlins 12-7

Apr 30 2025

In an exciting matchup on Wednesday, Tony Gonsolin made a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery, throwing six solid innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Miami Marlins 12-7. Mookie Betts was a standout performer, driving in four runs and helping the Dodgers extend their winning streak to five games.

Gonsolin, who hadn’t started since August 18, 2023, showcased his skills by allowing three runs and six hits while striking out nine batters and walking none in a 77-pitch outing. His performance was a significant boost for the Dodgers, who are looking to solidify their position in the league.

The Dodgers' offense was on fire, racking up 17 hits throughout the game. They quickly turned a narrow 4-3 lead into an impressive 8-3 advantage in just four pitches during the sixth inning. Betts hit a two-run triple that bounced off the center-field wall, and Freddie Freeman followed up with a two-run homer, further solidifying their lead. Earlier in the game, Betts also contributed to a three-run third inning with a two-run single.

On the other side, Cal Quantrill (2-3) struggled on the mound for Miami, giving up four runs and six hits over 3 2/3 innings, which dropped his record to 1-7 with an 8.22 ERA in nine appearances against the Dodgers. Kyle Stowers was a bright spot for the Marlins, hitting two home runs during the game.

Max Muncy, who had been off to a slow start this season, finally found his groove, smashing a fastball from Quantrill 433 feet to center for his first homer of the year. Muncy had entered the game with a .180 batting average and just four RBIs in 28 games, but he also tripled in the seventh inning, showing signs of a turnaround.

In the ninth inning, Stowers hit his second homer, and Liam Hicks added a three-run double off Yoendrys Gomez. However, the game ended dramatically when Teoscar Hernández made a diving stop on a grounder from Jesus Sanchez, beating him to the bag to secure the win for the Dodgers.

Hernández had a stellar game, collecting three hits and raising his batting average to .425 over his last nine games, where he has hit four homers, six doubles, and driven in 15 runs.

Looking ahead, Yoshinobu Yamamoto (3-2, 1.06 ERA) is set to start for the Dodgers in their series opener against Atlanta on Friday, facing off against Grant Homes (2-1, 4.50 ERA). Meanwhile, the Marlins will kick off a three-game series against the Athletics at home.
