Mystery Unraveled: Twitch's Mysterious Bans on PewDiePie, Shroud, and Lirik
Twitch users were left scratching their heads as popular channels dedicated to PewDiePie, Shroud, and Lirik faced a series of bans, each lasting under 30 minutes, within a span of just two weeks.
On October 3, 2024, Twitch suspended these three channels, which continuously streamed rerun content from the respective streamers. The sudden bans left many bewildered, only to see the channels reinstated just 15 minutes later, with the streamers back in action.
However, the rollercoaster of bans continued as all three channels were once again banned on October 12, only to be swiftly reinstated within 15 minutes. Fans hoped this would be the end of the bans, but their hopes were dashed when the channels were hit with yet another ban two days later.
On October 14, the PewDiePie, Shroud, and Lirik_247 accounts faced their third ban, this time enduring a 30-minute hiatus before being revived. Surprisingly, shortly after the channels were unbanned, they were hit with a fourth ban since the beginning of October.
Similar to the previous suspensions, all three accounts were back online just 15 minutes after the bans were imposed. PewDiePie's Twitch channel, managed by CoPilotMedia since March 2023, boasts nearly 2 million followers with an average viewer count of around 200.
In contrast, the Shroud and Lirik_247 channels, established in the summer of 2024, have already garnered a substantial following on the Amazon-owned platform.
These consecutive bans coincide with Twitch's recent update to its Community Guidelines, focusing on combating unoriginal content and impersonation. While the exact reasons for these bans remain unclear, the tightened rules on impersonation could be a contributing factor.
The updated guidelines emphasize the prohibition of impersonation, stating, "Impersonation is a malicious practice that compromises trust in our service and can harm the target of impersonation. Content or activity meant to impersonate an individual or organization is prohibited, including impersonation of Twitch staff, celebrities, companies, or friends."
Despite the bans, none of the three influencers have addressed the issue publicly. Dexerto has reached out to Twitch for a statement regarding these mysterious and recurrent bans.
