A Colorado woman was arrested last week following the tragic death of her 76-year-old mother, who suffered from dementia, in a home overrun by 54 dogs.

Jessica Hoff, 47, was taken into custody by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, more than a month after LaVonne Hoff's lifeless body was discovered in their shared residence.

Authorities were alerted to the Colorado City home after reports of an unconscious woman. Upon arrival, officers found LaVonne's body surrounded by several loose dogs, with many more scattered throughout the house, alongside seven bird cages.

According to police, detectives determined that LaVonne was left alone and subsequently attacked by the dogs while Jessica was out shopping. An autopsy confirmed that she died as a result of the dog attack.

LaVonne's dementia was so advanced that she required constant care, raising serious questions about Jessica's decision to leave her alone with the animals.

A search of both the home and an additional property owned by Jessica revealed the shocking number of animals being kept, with 54 dogs and seven birds found in deplorable conditions. Many of the animals were reportedly neglected and in poor health.

Authorities stated that the dogs and birds were living in unsanitary environments, prompting the seizure of the animals by county animal resources.

Jessica Hoff has been booked into the Pueblo County Jail, facing charges of criminal negligence resulting in the death of an at-risk adult, as well as 54 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, one for each dog found in the home.
