Monkey Business: Police Issue Warning as 40 Primates Break Free from Research Facility
Residents in South Carolina are currently on high alert after 43 monkeys made a daring escape from the Alpha Genesis research facility. The incident, reported by NBC News on Thursday, November 7, has prompted the local police to take swift action.
Alpha Genesis, known for providing "nonhuman primate products and bio-research services," is now at the center of a primate pursuit as law enforcement deploys thermal imaging cameras and traps to locate and safely capture the runaway primates.
The Yemassee Police Department wasted no time in alerting the public via Facebook, urging residents to refrain from interacting with the monkeys and to contact 911 immediately if spotted. They emphasized the importance of securing doors and windows to prevent any unexpected primate house visits.
According to the police statement, the escaped monkeys are young females weighing around seven pounds. Remarkably, these primates have never been subjected to testing due to their tender age and petite size. A spokesperson from Alpha Genesis reassured the public that these young escapees pose no risk of carrying diseases.
Alpha Genesis, a facility specializing in clinical trials for brain disease disorders, boasts one of the most extensive nonhuman primate facilities in the United States, tailored specifically for monkeys.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Alpha Genesis has faced a primate prison break. In 2016, 19 monkeys managed to outsmart security measures, leading to a brief taste of freedom before being safely apprehended six hours later.
Animal escapes, though uncommon, do occur more frequently than anticipated. Just earlier this year, visitors at Ohio's Cedar Point amusement park found themselves in a frenzy as petting zoo animals broke loose, causing a temporary commotion. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the park promptly launched an investigation into the escape incident.
As the search for the 43 runaway monkeys continues, residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any sightings promptly. The unfolding monkey business serves as a reminder of the unpredictable escapades that can unfold even in the most controlled environments.
