Sora created a disturbing portrayal of Pokimane. Legal experts suggest there could be a big issue

Artificial Intelligence is making waves in the tech world, but its latest creations are causing quite a stir. OpenAI's Sora, which made its debut on December 9, has already raised eyebrows by producing unsettling replicas of popular Twitch personalities like Auronplay and Pokimane.

Since its launch, Sora has been put to the test by enthusiasts who have used the tool to generate a variety of content, from first-person shooters to Mario-inspired platformers. However, it was its ability to replicate Twitch streams that caught the attention of many, including TechCrunch, which uncovered a remarkably accurate rendition of Auronplay interacting with his audience, complete with intricate details like his tattoos.

Not stopping there, Sora also attempted to recreate Pokimane, albeit with results that some have likened to a character from a horror movie. While the AI took some creative liberties in its portrayal of the streamer, the outcome has been described as unsettling and eerie by numerous observers.

These developments have not gone unnoticed by legal experts, with copyright attorney Evan Everist from Dorsey & Whitney expressing concerns about potential legal ramifications. Everist highlighted the complex layers of copyright protection involved in videos of gameplay, emphasizing the risks associated with training AI models using copyrighted material.

According to Everist, "Videos of playthroughs involve at least two layers of copyright protection: the contents of the game as owned by the game developer, and the unique video created by the player or videographer capturing the player’s experience. And for some games, there’s a potential third layer of rights in the form of user-generated content appearing in software."

He further elaborated, "Should courts find copyright liability for training AI models, each of these copyright holders would be potential plaintiffs or licensing sources. For any developers training AI on such videos, the risk exposure is exponential."

Pokimane herself has addressed the topic of AI during her broadcasts, expressing both fascination and apprehension about its capabilities. In a stream from January 2023, she pondered, "What if someday we have streamers that evolve from chat GPT?"
