Dallas Cowboys Shock Fans by Releasing Star RB Ezekiel Elliot
In a stunning turn of events, the Dallas Cowboys have decided to part ways with their star running back, Ezekiel Elliot, right before the conclusion of the 2024 season.
Cowboys Owner, President, and General Manager, Jerry Jones, expressed the team's decision, stating, "Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today."
Elliot, who has been a pivotal player for the Cowboys for eight seasons, leaves behind a legacy that Jones acknowledged, saying, "Zeke's impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him, and wish him the absolute best."
Following his release, Elliot will now enter the waiver system. If unclaimed, he will have the freedom to sign with any team, although his recent performance may impact the interest from potential suitors. Since 2021, Elliot has not reached the 1,000-yard rushing mark or maintained an average of over 3.8 yards per carry.
The journey for Elliot with the Cowboys began in 2016 when he was drafted in the first round as the fourth overall pick. His rookie year was nothing short of spectacular, finishing second in the NFL with 1,994 total scrimmage yards and clinching the NFL rushing title. Elliot's exceptional performance earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl and a place in the All-Pro roster, making him a standout rookie in Cowboys history.
After a brief stint with the New England Patriots in 2023, Elliot returned to the Cowboys in 2024 on a one-year contract. However, his 2024 season statistics fell short of expectations, with 74 carries for 226 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games.
