Cody Glass Shines in New Jersey Debut, Leading Devils to Victory Over Flyers
Cody Glass made a splash in his first game with the New Jersey Devils, scoring a goal that helped his team secure a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.
Acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh just before the deadline, Glass wasted no time making an impact. He found the back of the net 11:10 into the first period, firing a wrist shot past Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov to kick off the scoring.
Jake Allen was solid in net for the Devils, racking up 23 saves to notch his 10th win of the season. He made several crucial stops, including a remarkable save against Bobby Brink during a Flyers power play late in the third period, keeping the Devils ahead.
Erik Haula added to the score in the second period, and Dawson Mercer sealed the deal with an empty-netter, helping the Devils break a three-game losing streak.
On the other side, Jamie Drysdale scored for Philadelphia, while Fedotov managed 20 saves. Unfortunately for the Flyers, this loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat, all at home. They've struggled offensively, scoring two goals or fewer in eight of their last 14 games.
In light of several key injuries, the Devils ramped up their physical play against the Flyers, out-hitting them 18-12. Nathan Bastin led the charge with four hits, showcasing the team's determination to control the game.
For the Flyers, defenseman Cam York returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch the previous game. He logged significant ice time, playing the third-most minutes for Philadelphia, but ended the night with a minus-1 rating.
Glass' goal was made possible when Flyers rookie Matvei Michkov failed to backcheck effectively, a mistake that did not sit well with Flyers coach John Tortorella, who subsequently benched Michkov for the remainder of the first period.
The Devils' centers dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 25 draws for a success rate of 63%, which significantly contributed to their puck possession and overall control of the game.
Looking ahead, the Devils will return home on Tuesday to face off against Columbus, while the Flyers will continue their homestand against Ottawa.
