Culpepper Predicts Bright Future for Vikings QB McCarthy

Jun 19 2025

Daunte Culpepper, renowned for his record-setting tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, is optimistic about the team's quarterback future. Recently, he shared insights on J.J. McCarthy, the first-round draft pick poised to lead the Vikings in 2025.

"I saw him at practice last week and he looks great," Culpepper remarked during an interview. "He has that it factor, I always say, he has it. And I can see it in his eyes, he's ready to go out and tear it up."

McCarthy, selected 10th overall, holds the distinction of being the highest-drafted quarterback in Vikings history, surpassing Culpepper's 1999 selection by one spot. After missing his rookie season due to injury, expectations are soaring for the young passer. He enters a favorable environment, supported by a revamped offensive line, a strategic mind in head coach Kevin O'Connell, and a talented roster featuring standout receiver Justin Jefferson.

"I think it won't be a hard transition for him in the NFL," Culpepper stated. "As long as we keep him healthy and keep him off the ground, with those weapons around him, I see great things."

Culpepper's own career was marked by exceptional performances, particularly in 2004 when he thrived with Hall of Famer Randy Moss. That season, he completed 69.2% of his passes for 4,717 yards, 39 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions—records that still stand in the franchise.

However, a severe knee injury the following year altered the course of his career. "It definitely changed the trajectory of my career," he reflected. "Didn't know it then; you always think you're gonna overcome everything. I was able to at least come back and play some, but I was never myself."

McCarthy is currently recovering from a less severe injury but is expected to make a significant impact. Culpepper believes McCarthy possesses the potential to become the franchise quarterback the Vikings have sought since his own playing days.

"I think that he's gonna surprise a lot of people," Culpepper asserted. "His ability is impressive; I watched him make every throw. He has a lot of zip on his passes and is very knowledgeable of the offense—he knows where everybody's at. I think he's gonna be a master; he's working his way to be a master. Just remember I said it first—he's gonna tear up the league."
