Kids Take Center Stage in "Death! A Musical" at Minnesota Fringe

The Minnesota Fringe Festival showcases over 100 performances across various venues, and this year, a standout production is entirely crafted by children.

At the Phoenix Theater, Director Gabriel Shen leads a rehearsal for "Death! A Musical," a project they conceived at just 12 years old.

"Adults rarely discuss death, even when faced with loss; it remains a taboo subject," Shen remarked. "Everyone will encounter it eventually, often at a young age, so it's crucial to address it openly."

Vivienne Steele takes on the role of Alana Hemming, the musical's lead character.

"Despite its title, 'Death' isn't frightening. It's humorous and educational," Steele explained.

The cast comprises 20 children, primarily in middle school.

"It can get chaotic at times, but that's expected with kids," Steele noted. "Gabriel is doing an excellent job, and the fact that they wrote this musical is truly impressive."

Orchestrator Angela Steiner breathes life into the musical score, supported by Shen's parents and other adults involved in the production.

Confidence and creativity radiate from the young performers. Shen acknowledges that their future paths could vary widely, yet they remain unconcerned with Broadway aspirations.

"The skills I'm gaining from this production will be invaluable for whatever I pursue later," they stated.

This musical illustrates the potential of youth.

"Death! A Musical" serves as a testament to the insights that young minds can offer.

The show opens at the Southern Theatre this Friday.
