Kirk Herbstreit Reflects on 30-Year Bond with Lee Corso as Farewell Approaches

Jul 23 2025

As Lee Corso prepares for his final bow on College Gameday, Kirk Herbstreit, his longtime cohost, reminisces about their enduring friendship that spans three decades. The emotional farewell is set for August 30, coinciding with the highly anticipated matchup between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns in Columbus.

Corso, now 89, has been a fixture on the show since its inception in 1987, bringing his unique flair and insights to college football fans across the nation. Herbstreit, who joined the program in 1996, acknowledges the profound impact Corso has had on his life, both professionally and personally.

“Sometimes you learn more from how people make you feel than what they say,” Herbstreit remarked during an exclusive interview while promoting his collaboration with Purina Pro Plan. “He’s the epitome of that.”

Herbstreit recalls the first time he met Corso during his audition at just 25 years old, feeling overwhelmed yet inspired. “From that very first day until now, he makes everybody feel special,” he shared. “His eyes, his words. He cares. Even when facing health challenges, he remains positive and grateful. Watching him has shaped my outlook on life.”

Corso's resilience is notable; he suffered a stroke in 2009 that left him partially paralyzed. Despite this setback, he continues to embody positivity, a trait that has influenced Herbstreit deeply. “I try to wake up every day and just be grateful for a new day,” he added. “There are so many life lessons, but the most significant is how he inspires me to maintain a positive attitude.”

As Herbstreit gears up for another season of College Gameday, he balances his time between football analysis and his four golden retrievers: Peter, Mitch, Theo, and Beau. His pets have become beloved figures on the show and at various football events, often prompting fans to engage with him about their own dogs.

“People see me and they want to talk about their dogs,” he noted with a smile. This connection has led him to partner with Purina Pro Plan for their “Fueled By” video series, which highlights the relationships elite athletes have with their pets. NFL tight end George Kittle and soccer star Rose Lavelle are among those featured.

“I’ve always had dogs,” Herbstreit explained. “I love the relationship with them. They’re all so different. When Pro Plan approached me about this project, it was a no-brainer.”

He expressed enthusiasm for traveling and meeting fellow athletes, discovering their shared love for dogs amidst their busy lives. “It was really fun to get to know them as dog owners and see how much they care about their pets,” he said. “Despite their hectic schedules, they cherish the moments spent with their dogs.”

As the countdown to Corso's farewell continues, Herbstreit’s reflections serve as a testament to their friendship and the lasting impact of Corso’s spirit on those around him. The legacy of their bond will undoubtedly resonate with fans as they tune in for this poignant moment in College Gameday history.
