Lynx Secure 11th Consecutive Home Victory Over Sky
Courtney Williams delivered an impressive performance, matching her season high with 25 points, while Napheesa Collier contributed 21 as the Minnesota Lynx edged past the Chicago Sky 80-75 on Sunday night.
With this victory, Minnesota (17-2) established a franchise record by achieving 11 straight home wins to kick off the season. This surpasses their previous record of ten consecutive home victories during their championship run in 2013.
Collier showcased her skills at the free-throw line, converting all seven attempts and extending her streak to a franchise-record 45 consecutive successful foul shots. This achievement eclipses Lindsay Whalen's previous single-season record of 41 and Candice Wiggins' streak of 44 that spanned the end of the 2009 season into 2010.
For Chicago (5-12), Angel Reese recorded her 11th double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists.
In a critical moment, Kayla McBride executed a running floater just as the shot clock expired, pushing the Lynx ahead 76-70 with only 27 seconds remaining. Rachel Banham responded with a three-pointer to narrow the gap to 77-75 with 17 seconds left. McBride then made one of two free throws, and Alanna Smith thwarted Banham's attempt to tie the game with a block on a potential three-pointer with just 9.1 seconds on the clock.
Banham's performance included six three-pointers, totaling a season-high of 20 points for the Sky, while Elizabeth Williams added 12 points. Both Ariel Atkins and Michaela Onyenwere contributed 11 points each.
The Sky initially surged ahead with a commanding 24-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, their largest margin of the game. However, they struggled in the second quarter, shooting only 25% (5 of 20). The Lynx capitalized on this slump, launching a 16-2 run to take a three-point lead before Reese's layup brought the halftime score to 38-37.
This matchup marked the Lynx's third game in four days and their fourth in six days, showcasing their resilience and determination on the court.
