Mac Jones Reports Disturbing Discovery Before 49ers' Overtime Victory
Mac Jones stepped onto the field for the San Francisco 49ers’ game against the Los Angeles Rams on October 2, but not before experiencing a chilling moment that would haunt most. From his hotel balcony in Marina del Rey, California, he spotted what appeared to be a floating dead body in the water.
According to sources, Jones, 27, shared this unsettling sight with his teammates, prompting immediate action. The police were alerted, and as the team boarded their bus to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, they noticed investigators and a coroner’s van at the marina, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
As of October 3, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Despite this shocking distraction and battling through an injured knee and cramping during the game, Jones delivered an impressive performance, throwing for 342 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, ultimately leading his team to a crucial overtime victory.
“Definitely a lot of things happened, but I feel good,” Jones stated post-game. “Just working through some stuff. I was able to play, so that’s all that matters. If I can protect myself, then it’s my job to be out there.”
Jones emphasized the support from his teammates: “We talked all week about how tough we had to be for four quarters. It really came down to who was going to be the toughest team, and I believe it was us. We have to continue to do that to win.”
This game marked Jones’s third start of the season following an injury to starting quarterback Brock Purdy on September 7 against the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy's status remains uncertain for the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 12.
“They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,” Jones remarked. “I’m just trying to get some wins for [Purdy] so it helps us down the line. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. I’ve been in his position; I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win because at the end of the season that could be hit or miss between the playoffs or not.”

In March, Jones signed a two-year contract worth $7 million with the 49ers after being selected No. 15 overall by the New England Patriots in 2021. He spent his first three seasons with New England and played in ten games last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Following his gutsy performance, Jones received accolades from both teammates and head coach Kyle Shanahan. “I was real impressed,” Shanahan said. “He played his ass off, man. He was unbelievable in the first half. He got banged up there in the second half and battled through it. He protected the ball and, going against that defense and throwing the ball that many times without a turnover, I can’t say enough good things about Mac.”
Star running back Christian McCaffrey echoed this sentiment: “He’s an absolute warrior. He’s a leader. He’s someone we can all get behind, for sure. It’s a testament to his attitude and the way he plays football.”
The 49ers currently hold a 4-1 record this season despite facing significant injuries to key players including Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings.
