Mahomes Stands by Kelce and Reid Amidst Chiefs' Struggles

Dec 08 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs faced a setback on December 7, losing 20-10 to the Houston Texans, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains resolute in his belief in the team's potential.

During the postgame press conference, Mahomes, 30, defended head coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce, who is contemplating his future after a challenging season. “Every season that I’ve had with him these last few years, I try to cherish because you never know,” Mahomes remarked, emphasizing the importance of valuing each moment with Kelce, 36.

Kelce's performance has been under scrutiny, especially after a dropped pass in the fourth quarter that led to an interception, sealing the game for the Texans. Despite this, Mahomes expressed confidence in Kelce’s commitment to the remainder of the season. “He got himself in great shape this year and he’s played great football,” Mahomes noted, acknowledging Kelce's efforts as they aim for a fourth Super Bowl title since 2020.

As the Chiefs grapple with their fourth loss in five games, Mahomes remains optimistic. “I know one thing is he’ll give everything he has the rest of this season to try and give us a chance to make a playoff run,” he stated, recognizing the dwindling playoff chances but affirming the team's determination.

Reid, 67, faced criticism for a risky fourth-and-1 decision from their own 31-yard line that backfired. Mahomes defended his coach, saying, “Coach Reid believes in us and we’ve executed in that same situation several times this season.” Even in defeat, Mahomes maintains faith in his teammates. “I’m going to go to those guys in big moments,” he asserted, recalling their past successes in crucial games.

Reid accepted responsibility for the failed conversion attempt. “I thought we could get it,” he admitted. “It’s important to take advantage of opportunities and I thought it was an opportunity. I was wrong in hindsight.”

The Chiefs' playoff odds have dropped to 15 percent following this latest loss. With a record of 6-7, they have four regular-season games left, starting with a matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones remains hopeful despite the odds. “We’ve still got an opportunity. Even though it’s a slim opportunity, we have an opportunity,” he said. “As long as we have an opportunity and a chance, we can control that, and let the cards fall where they fall.”
