Marc Shaiman Discusses "Some Like It Hot" Ahead of Denver Performances
Marc Shaiman, an acclaimed composer with a collection of Tony, Emmy, and Grammy awards, is eager for Colorado audiences to experience his latest creation. His work spans stage, television, and film, making him a prominent figure in the performing arts.
Among his recent endeavors is the musical "Some Like It Hot," which he co-created with lyricist Scott Wittman. This upbeat comedy promises to deliver a delightful experience when it arrives in Denver in early July.
Before the show hits the Mile High City, Shaiman took a moment to discuss the production during an exclusive interview in Philadelphia, where he was at the historic Forrest Theatre. "Some Like It Hot is a comedy about mistaken identities," he explained, emphasizing the deeper themes woven into the narrative.

As he elaborated on the story, Shaiman posed a thought-provoking question: "Who are you, and have you been mistaken your whole life about who you are?" This introspective angle adds layers to the comedic plot.
When asked about his favorite aspect of the musical's score, Shaiman's humor shone through. "What do I love about the music of this production? Well, I wrote it," he quipped, showcasing his pride in the work.
Shaiman's impressive resume includes collaborations with entertainment legends such as Barbra Streisand and Robin Williams. He relishes every challenge in music composition but found particular joy in crafting tunes reminiscent of a 1930s big band for "Some Like It Hot." "It was just that birth of swing music," he noted, reflecting on the era's rich musical landscape.

The musical remains faithful to the original film's plot, which follows two men who witness a mob murder and disguise themselves as women to escape danger by joining an all-female band. This blend of comedy and music presents a unique creative challenge that Shaiman embraced.
"I just love the big band," he said. "Some Like It Hot was this great moment where I got to revel in this kind of songwriting. We just loved this time period." His enthusiasm for the era is palpable as he discusses the vibrant musical influences that shaped his work.
Despite its historical roots, Shaiman believes that "Some Like It Hot" will resonate with audiences of all ages when it plays at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. "I feel the music of Some Like It Hot is something all generations should be able to enjoy because it is a joyful sound," he stated, highlighting the universal appeal of the production.

The musical will run at the Buell Theatre from July 8 through July 20. For ticket information, visit the Denver Center for the Performing Arts website.
In addition to his work on "Some Like It Hot," Shaiman continues to inspire audiences with his innovative compositions and engaging storytelling.
