Maxwell Steps In as Headliner for Roots Picnic 2025
Roots Picnic 2025 has announced a significant change in its lineup, with Maxwell stepping in as the new headliner after D'Angelo had to withdraw from the event.
On Friday, the festival shared the news via social media, revealing that Maxwell will take the stage on Day 1, Saturday, May 31. The announcement came as a response to D'Angelo's unexpected medical situation.
In an Instagram post, the festival stated, "Due to a longer-than-expected surgical recovery, D'Angelo won't be able to join us at Roots Picnic this year. We're sending love and keeping him in our thoughts as he continues to heal!"
D'Angelo himself addressed fans in a heartfelt statement, explaining that complications from a recent surgery made it impossible for him to perform. "It is nearly impossible to express how disappointed I am not to be able to play with my Brothers 'The Roots,'" he shared. "And even more disappointed to not see all of You."
He expressed gratitude towards his fans, stating, "I am so thankful to my beautiful fans for continuing to rock with me and I thank you for your continued support. I am currently in the Lab & can't wait to serve up what's in the Pot! LOVE U All and will see you very soon!"
Maxwell, also a prominent figure in the neo-soul genre, brings his own legacy to the festival. With three Grammy Awards and timeless hits like "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)," "Sumthin' Sumthin'," and the award-winning "Pretty Wings," he is expected to deliver an unforgettable performance.
Additionally, there has been a minor adjustment to Saturday's schedule: the Baller Alert: Go-Go Backyard Band featuring CeeLo Green has been moved from Saturday to Sunday, June 1.
The Roots Picnic has a history of lineup changes; in 2023, Usher was added as a co-headliner after Diddy withdrew due to unforeseen circumstances. This year’s festival will take place at The Mann Center in Fairmount Park from May 31 to June 1.
