Mets Extend Winning Streak to Seven with 5-3 Victory Over Giants

Jul 27 2025

In a decisive seventh inning, Ronny Mauricio and Juan Soto launched home runs, propelling the New York Mets to a 5-3 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. This win marks the Mets' seventh straight, tying their season best.

Mauricio showcased an impressive performance, achieving a career-high four hits, including two doubles and a game-tying homer from the bottom of the batting order. Jeff McNeil also contributed significantly with two doubles, aiding the Mets in completing a three-game sweep and extending their lead in the NL East to 1.5 games over Philadelphia.

On the other side, Matt Chapman was a standout for the Giants, hitting two home runs and driving in all three of their runs. The Giants threatened in the ninth inning, loading the bases with two walks and a hit batter. However, Edwin Díaz closed out the game by striking out Willy Adames and Chapman.

After trailing 3-2 due to Chapman's two-run homer off starter Kodai Senga in the fifth inning, the Mets rallied. Mauricio tied the game in the seventh with a powerful drive into McCovey Cove off reliever Randy Rodriguez (3-2). Following strikeouts from Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor, Soto delivered his team-leading 25th home run, giving the Mets a crucial 4-3 lead.

To solidify their advantage, the Mets added an insurance run in the ninth inning through consecutive doubles from Mauricio and Nimmo.

José Buttó (3-1), one of four Mets relievers, secured the win by retiring three batters. Gregory Soto made a strong debut for New York, pitching a perfect seventh inning, while Díaz notched his 23rd save in the ninth.

Senga's outing included five walks over five innings, during which he allowed three runs and four hits. Mauricio also played a key defensive role, halting a potential Giants rally by fielding Adames' slow grounder and tagging out Heliot Ramos as he attempted to advance from second base.

Rodriguez had previously allowed only one home run all season before succumbing to two in a single inning against the Mets.

Looking ahead, Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (3-1, 4.62 ERA) is set to face the Padres in San Diego on Monday. Meanwhile, Carson Whisenhunt, the Giants' top pitching prospect, will make his major league debut against Pittsburgh on the same day.
