Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore Dismissed Amid Allegations
The University of Michigan announced the termination of head football coach Sherrone Moore on December 10, citing an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member as the reason for his dismissal.
In a press release, athletic director Warde Manuel stated, “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately.” The investigation conducted by the university revealed credible evidence of conduct that violated university policy, which Manuel emphasized is met with zero tolerance.
Effective immediately, associate head coach Biff Poggi will step in as interim head coach. Poggi, who previously led the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, had already taken on interim responsibilities earlier this season when Moore was suspended amid a sign-stealing investigation.
Moore's tenure as head coach lasted two seasons, during which he led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record in the 2025 regular season. The team is set to compete against the University of Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve. His overall record at Michigan stands at 18-8.
Details surrounding the nature of the alleged relationship remain undisclosed. Moore, who married Kelli in 2015, is a father to three daughters: Shiloh, Solei, and Sadie.
Taking over the head coaching role in 2024, Moore succeeded Jim Harbaugh, who had led the Wolverines to a National Championship appearance in 2023 before moving on to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Moore had been part of Harbaugh’s coaching staff prior to his promotion.
Upon his hiring, Manuel praised Moore’s leadership qualities, particularly his impact on the offensive line and players. “Sherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program,” he remarked. “He is a dynamic, fierce and competitive individual who gets the best out of the players he mentors.”
Manuel also highlighted Moore’s commitment to the team during challenging times, stating, “Sherrone stepped up this fall and served as the interim head coach when the program and especially the team needed him.”
Moore made history as the 21st head football coach at Michigan and was recognized as the first African American to hold this position within the program’s long-standing legacy, which includes 12 claimed national championships and three consecutive College Football Playoff appearances from 2021 to 2023.
Upon his appointment, Moore expressed his dedication to maintaining the university's championship legacy. “We will do everything each day as a TEAM to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played at the University of Michigan for the past 144 years,” he stated. “Our standards will not change.”
Moore emphasized a commitment to discipline and excellence both on and off the field, aiming to foster a culture of passion for football among players and staff alike. His vision included achieving success in academics and community engagement alongside athletic performance.
