New Jersey Duo Revives Martial Arts Cinema with a Modern Twist
Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is home to a filmmaking partnership that is redefining the landscape of martial arts cinema. Joey Min and Stephanie Pham, the creative minds behind Art School Dropouts, are proving that passion and innovation can thrive outside Hollywood.
Min, who established the production company, has cultivated a dedicated following on YouTube over the past decade. His collaboration with Pham, a Taekwondo practitioner since childhood, merges their martial arts expertise with a shared enthusiasm for action films. "The old school '80s and '90s Hong Kong action films with Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and Sammo Hung remind us that martial arts can be fun," Pham noted, reflecting on their influences.
The duo's films serve as both homage and evolution, honoring traditional martial arts while integrating modern narratives, gaming visuals, and humor. "What we learned from martial arts and the films we grew up watching fuels our passion," Min explained.
Their newest endeavor, Player Agency, takes inspiration from virtual reality and unfolds like an interactive video game. Featuring dynamic fight choreography, innovative editing techniques, and a touch of nostalgic flair, this project marks a significant leap in their creative journey.
Over the last decade, Art School Dropouts has produced numerous short films, collaborating with notable figures such as action star Michael Jai White while retaining full creative autonomy.
