North Texas Teen to Train with Dirk Nowitzki's Former Coach in Germany
A 14-year-old basketball prodigy from North Texas is set to embark on an extraordinary journey to Germany, where he will train under Holger Geschwindner, the renowned coach who played a pivotal role in shaping NBA icon Dirk Nowitzki's career.
Michael "Tise" Lawson, a freshman at Grace Preparatory Academy in Arlington, has been selected as the sole American participant for this prestigious basketball camp, an opportunity facilitated by the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center.
"I'm going to be going to Germany for a basketball camp, and I'm excited and preparing for it," Lawson expressed, his enthusiasm palpable.
His selection is not just a personal achievement; it reflects the faith placed in him by those who recognize his potential. "I was just thanking God, especially," he added, highlighting the significance of this moment in his young life.
Geschwindner is celebrated for his innovative training techniques that blend traditional basketball drills with unconventional methods like dancing and rowing. "He doesn't do what you see trainers here in America do," Lawson noted, emphasizing the uniqueness of Geschwindner's approach. "I personally think he is one of the greatest coaches ever."
The excitement surrounding Lawson's journey has even reached Nowitzki, who sent a heartfelt video message wishing him well. "It's a big tradition, and we are excited to include Michael Lawson this year," Nowitzki stated, underscoring the importance of this opportunity.
As Lawson prepares for his trip, his father, Lanre Lawson, reflects on the significance of this experience. "This is his dream. He wants to be in the NBA, and this makes a huge difference in his life," he remarked, capturing the essence of a father's pride.

Fred Campbell, Lawson's coach, attributes the teen's success to his relentless work ethic. "High school basketball is highly competitive here in North Texas," Campbell explained. "We get a lot of reps up, and we just have fun in the gym and stay consistent with it. When you're the most committed, you get rewarded with cool trips like this."
Lawson acknowledges the vital role his coaches and support system have played in his development. "Thanks to Coach Fred and others, they all prepared me for this moment," he said. "I found confidence, confidence I didn't even know I had."
As he gears up for his adventure in Germany, Lawson is ready to seize this opportunity and showcase his skills on an international stage.
