Pete Golding Takes the Helm as Ole Miss Football Coach
In a swift move, Pete Golding was elevated to head football coach at Ole Miss on November 30, 2025, following Lane Kiffin's exit to Louisiana State University. This transition came after Kiffin's successful tenure, which concluded with a decisive 38-19 victory over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.
Kiffin's departure stemmed from protracted contract negotiations with the university, which ultimately led to his decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU. He expressed disappointment over not being allowed to continue coaching through the playoffs, stating, “My request to stay on was denied by [Athletic Director] Keith Carter despite the team asking him to allow me to keep coaching them.”
Golding, who had served as the defensive coordinator since January 2023, was named the new head coach just hours after Kiffin's announcement. “We could not be more excited to announce Pete Golding as the next head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels,” Carter remarked, emphasizing Golding’s ability to unite the team and lead them toward a national title.

Before his rise at Ole Miss, Golding built a solid coaching resume. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Delta State University in 2006 and climbed through various defensive coordinator roles at institutions like Southern Miss and the University of Texas at San Antonio. His five-year stint at Alabama under Nick Saban solidified his reputation as a top-tier defensive strategist.
However, Golding's journey has not been without controversy. In February 2022, he faced legal issues after being arrested for driving under the influence. He publicly apologized for his actions, acknowledging the impact of his decisions on others and expressing a desire to learn from his mistakes.
Golding’s personal life reflects his deep ties to Mississippi. He met his wife, Carolyn, while attending Delta State University. A proud Ole Miss alumna herself, Carolyn has been actively involved in supporting the university, including a significant donation to its accountancy school.
The couple has three children: Braxton, Bentley, and Bailey. Their sons were eager about their father's new role, asking if they could participate in game-day activities like handling fire extinguishers on the sidelines and walking Kiffin’s dog during Rebel Walk.
