Phillies Secure Unusual Walk-Off Win Against Red Sox

Jul 21 2025

In a thrilling finish, the Philadelphia Phillies triumphed over the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Monday night, thanks to an unusual walk-off call of catcher's interference in the 10th inning. Automatic runner Brandon Marsh crossed home plate, sealing the victory without a single hit recorded by the Phillies in that frame.

The decisive moment unfolded with no outs when Edmundo Sosa's bat made contact with the glove of Boston catcher Carlos Narvaez during a check swing on a 2-2 count. Following a review initiated by the Phillies, the original call was overturned, allowing Marsh to score the winning run.

This marked the first walk-off win attributed to catcher's interference since August 1, 1971, when the Los Angeles Dodgers achieved a similar feat against the Cincinnati Reds.

On the mound, Phillies starter Zack Wheeler delivered a solid performance, pitching six innings and yielding two earned runs on seven hits while striking out ten batters. The bullpen, featuring Tanner Banks, Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, and Max Lazar, maintained the pressure by throwing scoreless innings, with Lazar earning his first major league victory.

Philadelphia's offense came alive in the fourth inning, where they scored twice. Bryce Harper initiated the rally with a double, followed by Nick Castellanos' RBI single. Castellanos advanced to second on a passed ball and later scored on J.T. Realmuto's single.

For Boston, Jarren Duran kicked off the game with his ninth home run of the season. Trevor Story later tied the game at two with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler put in a commendable effort over seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs—one of which was earned. However, Jordan Hicks faced challenges in the 10th, suffering the loss after throwing ten pitches without recording an out.

Hicks walked Otto Kemp, who was attempting to bunt Marsh to third base. Following a wild pitch that advanced both Marsh and Kemp, Max Kepler was intentionally walked to set up Sosa's at-bat.

In recent games, Bryce Harper has been on fire, accumulating 14 hits and 13 extra-base hits—including nine doubles and four home runs—over his last eight games. This is a stark contrast to his previous 25 games, where he managed only seven extra-base hits.

Looking ahead, the Phillies are set to face off against Boston again on Tuesday, with Cristopher Sanchez (8-2, 2.50 ERA) taking the mound against Richard Fitts (1-3, 4.28) for the Red Sox.
