Poll Reveals Majority Support for World Cup 2026 in Massachusetts

Jul 30 2025

A recent survey conducted by Axios Boston shows that a significant portion of the audience, 56%, supports the idea of Massachusetts hosting the World Cup in 2026. This event is expected to attract tens of thousands of soccer enthusiasts to the state.

Next summer, seven matches will be held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, with additional festivities planned in Boston. While many see this as an opportunity for the city to showcase its global appeal, there remains a notable level of skepticism among residents. According to Axios' findings, 43% of readers expressed reservations about the event.

"Supporters believe it could be a fantastic chance for Boston to shine as a world-class city," noted Mike Deehan from Axios Boston. "However, concerns about traffic congestion and an influx of tourists are prevalent. Many are doubtful about the MBTA's ability to efficiently transport fans from Boston to Foxboro during the events."

In response to these transportation challenges, the MBTA is actively addressing concerns and plans to initiate construction on a new train station in Foxboro, aimed at accommodating the expected surge in visitors.

The World Cup is set to commence in Mexico City on June 11, 2026, with matches at Gillette Stadium scheduled between June 13 and July 9. A total of 48 teams will compete across 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, culminating in the final match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19.

Fans interested in attending are encouraged to register for tickets and create an ID on FIFA's official website.
