Rachel Simone Webb Discusses Her Role in "& Juliet" Ahead of Denver Performances
On June 4, the Buell Theatre will transform into a vibrant stage for "& Juliet," a musical that reimagines the fate of Shakespeare's iconic character. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is set to present this lively production, featuring pop hits from the last three decades that resonate with audiences across the nation.
Rachel Simone Webb, who takes on the role of Juliet, expressed her enthusiasm for the show. "The music is so much fun; this is the music of a lot of our childhoods," she remarked, highlighting the nostalgic connection many have with the songs.

Webb's immediate affection for the storyline and its underlying message drew her to the project. "I read the script and saw how funny it was and knew it was something I wanted to be a part of," she explained, emphasizing the humor woven throughout the narrative.
The musical features chart-topping hits from artists like Britney Spears, Kesha, and Katy Perry, which only fueled Webb's passion for the role. "I grew up listening to them. 'Roar' was a song I practiced with my vocal coach when I was 11 years old. Now, I get to sing it every night," she shared, reflecting on her journey as a performer.

Beyond entertainment, the lyrics play a crucial role in advancing the plot. "Initially, audiences laugh, and then they realize the songs fit well with the story," Webb noted. "Musical theatre does its job well when the songs tell the story without it having to be spoken."
Webb also appreciates how "& Juliet" promotes themes of empowerment and inclusivity. "It doesn't come along often where you get to shift the zeitgeist of culture," she stated. "It is important for people to consume art that pushes the envelope of female empowerment."

As the show navigates love, acceptance, and joy, Webb assures audiences that they will leave with smiles on their faces. "There is glitter on stage. There is confetti. We get to smile at the end of the show; it is not a tragedy," she said, encapsulating the uplifting spirit of the production.
& Juliet will run at the Buell Theatre from June 4 through June 15, with tickets available online for those eager to experience this unique take on a classic tale.
