Rain Disrupts USA Cup Soccer Matches, Offers Cool Relief
In Blaine, Minnesota, rain has taken center stage, leading to the postponement of several USA Cup soccer matches. The weather has been anything but predictable this week.
"It's probably the most diverse weather experience we've had in the years that I can remember," remarked Sara Soli, a tournament organizer with nearly a decade of experience.
Earlier in the tournament, wildfire smoke and extreme heat on Tuesday added to the challenges faced by players and organizers alike.
“We were very excited about coming to the opening ceremonies, and that was canceled. So a little bit sad about that, but it's OK. There's always next year,” expressed Sulekha Ali, who was there to support her son.
With around 1,200 teams from 20 countries participating, managing the schedule amid these changes is no small feat.
"We're trying to make good decisions, not impact their schedules as much as possible, but give them enough warning if we can," Soli explained. "We have to move not only teams and communicate that, but we also have to reassign referees or modify their day to fit the schedule as well. So it is a pretty big puzzle, if you will."
Fortunately, 17 of the 60 fields are turf, which Soli noted are less affected by excess water. Many of these fields are equipped with lights, allowing for extended playtime.
Eleven-year-old Mohamed Hassan played on one of the grass fields but expressed a preference for sunnier conditions. “I'd rather it to be sunny and warmer. It was good. It made me feel better because I don't really like the rain and stuff,” he said before his second match of the week.
His mother, Sulekha, bundled up against the chill, still found enjoyment in the event. “It's a little bit on the cold side. But I don't mind it. Compared to yesterday's heat, I don't mind it,” she noted.
Looking ahead, tournament organizers are optimistic as forecasts indicate improved weather conditions for the remainder of the event, with championship matches scheduled for Saturday.
