Rashee Rice to Attend Chiefs' Training Camp Despite Legal Troubles

Jul 21 2025

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that wide receiver Rashee Rice will join the team for training camp, despite facing a 30-day jail sentence. This decision comes after Rice's legal troubles were made public.

On July 17, the Dallas County District Attorney's office sentenced the 25-year-old NFL player to jail time along with five years of probation. Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The incident occurred in May 2024 when Rice crashed his Lamborghini SUV while driving at an alarming speed of 119 miles per hour, resulting in a multi-car accident in Dallas.

“We’re going to progress as normal with him,” Reid stated during a press conference on July 20. “He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’ll normally take.” This indicates that the team is willing to support Rice as he navigates his legal situation.

The Chiefs are set to kick off their training camp on July 22 at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. Reid further elaborated on the team's strategy, saying, “We always rotate that position. Depending on what happens here with the future — whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.”

A judge has allowed Rice to serve his jail sentence at any time during his five-year probation period. If he successfully completes the probation, his case will be dismissed, as reported by ESPN.

Meanwhile, the NFL is expected to take its own disciplinary action against Rice, with a suspension likely looming over him during the upcoming season. “We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter, which remains under review,” said NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy.

In a statement released through his attorney, Rice expressed remorse for the incident. “I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property,” he stated. “Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart.”

Rice also extended his apologies to innocent drivers and their families affected by his actions. Prior to his guilty plea, he paid over $115,000 in restitution to cover medical expenses for the victims involved in the crash.

The Kansas City Chiefs' training camp will run until August 13. The team is scheduled to begin their preseason on August 9 against the Arizona Cardinals, followed by their regular season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil on September 5.
