Russell Wilson Calls Out Sean Payton on Social Media
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson took to social media to express his discontent after former head coach Sean Payton made disparaging comments during a postgame press conference.
“Classless… but not surprised…,” Wilson, 36, tweeted on October 21, directly addressing Payton’s remarks following the Broncos' victory over the Giants on October 19.
Payton, 61, commented on the Giants' quarterback situation, saying, “They found a little spark with that quarterback,” referring to Jaxson Dart, who replaced Wilson as the starter after the Giants' rough start to the season. He added, “I was talking to [Giants president] John Mara not too long ago and I said, ‘We were hoping that that change would’ve happened long after our game.’”
Wilson was benched in Week 4 after the Giants began the season with three losses. His tenure with the Broncos ended when the team released him in March 2024.
In a pointed response, Wilson also referenced Payton’s involvement in the infamous Bountygate scandal, which saw players on Payton’s New Orleans Saints teams incentivized for injuring opponents. “Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media. 😆😂 #LetsRide 🤣,” he tweeted.

Payton faced a one-year suspension in 2012 for his role in that scandal, which has continued to haunt his legacy.
Despite the back-and-forth, Wilson quickly shifted focus to community service, visiting Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York on October 21. This visit has become a regular part of his routine.
“Over the past three months, we’ve had the incredible honor of welcoming Russell Wilson, quarterback for the New York Giants, to Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital,” the hospital shared on Instagram. “Russell’s visits have brought unforgettable joy to our patients, families, and staff. From heartfelt conversations to shared laughter and inspiring moments, he’s filled our hospital with hope, positivity, and a whole lot of smiles.”
During his visit, Wilson engaged with patients through games like bingo and air hockey and assisted them in creating “a list of affirmations to stay inspired.”
“Russell has made a lasting impression – reminding us all of the power of kindness and connection,” the hospital continued. “Thank you, Russell, for being a champion both on and off the field, and for cheering on our team with heart and plenty of high fives. We’re looking forward to more special moments to come 😊.”
Wilson shared his experience at Mount Sinai on social media as well, stating, “We set our hope in Him & on His love!!! Every day is a gift🙏🏽 Another Miraculous Tuesday.”
On the football front, Wilson maintained a positive outlook despite being benched in favor of Dart. “For me personally, I’m not done,” he told reporters. “I’ve got so much belief in myself and I know what I’m capable of. I know I can help this football team if that comes up.”
The Giants have recorded a 2-2 record since Dart took over as starting quarterback, including a narrow 33-32 loss to the Broncos in which they led 19-0 after three quarters.
