Ruth Chepngetich Faces Provisional Suspension Following Positive Doping Test

Jul 17 2025

Ruth Chepngetich, the reigning women's marathon world record-holder, is facing a provisional suspension due to a positive doping test. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced the suspension on Thursday, revealing that Chepngetich tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic and masking agent, back in March.

In a move that underscores the seriousness of the situation, Chepngetich voluntarily opted for the provisional suspension while the AIU conducts its investigation. This decision reflects her compliance with the ongoing inquiry, as noted by AIU official Brett Clothier, who confirmed that she was interviewed in person in Kenya in April.

Chepngetich made headlines last October when she shattered the women's marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon, finishing in an impressive 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds. This victory marked her third consecutive win at the event, solidifying her status as one of the elite athletes in long-distance running.

Her accolades also include a gold medal from the 2019 World Championships held in Qatar, where the women's marathon commenced at midnight to mitigate the oppressive heat. However, her recent doping allegations cast a shadow over her achievements.

The AIU has not provided a timeline for the disciplinary proceedings against the 30-year-old athlete. The substance involved, hydrochlorothiazide, is known for its potential to mask the effects of performance-enhancing drugs, raising significant concerns about fair competition.

In response to the provisional suspension, organizers of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon issued a statement acknowledging the situation. They emphasized their commitment to anti-doping measures and indicated that they would await the AIU's findings and any potential appeal from Chepngetich before making further comments.

As a World Athletics Platinum Label event, the Chicago Marathon adheres to stringent anti-doping protocols established by World Athletics, the World Anti-Doping Agency, and the United States Anti-Doping Agency. The organization remains dedicated to ensuring a level playing field for all professional athletes participating in the marathon.
