Stockton University Welcomes CR Flamengo for FIFA Club World Cup Training

Jun 04 2025

World-renowned soccer talent is set to touch down in New Jersey as preparations ramp up for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup.

While Lincoln Financial Field will serve as the venue for the matches in Philadelphia, Stockton University has been designated as a training facility for one of the participating teams.

In Galloway Township, the university's grounds crew is meticulously grooming the soccer field, focusing on straight lines and overlapping passes. With FIFA confirming that Brazilian powerhouse CR Flamengo will train at the site for approximately two weeks, crews are working tirelessly to ensure everything is perfect.

"CR Flamengo boasts a massive following of over 57 million fans worldwide," noted Jeff Haines, associate director of athletics and recreation at Stockton. "This is a significant opportunity for us, not just locally but on a global scale, showcasing Stockton to the world."

On Tuesday, fresh lines were painted on the field, and new goals were delivered by FIFA in anticipation of the team's practice sessions.

According to athletic director Tony Berich, representatives from CR Flamengo visited Stockton's campus last December. The quality of the Bermuda grass at G. Larry James Stadium was a key factor in their decision to train there.

"Without this field, I doubt we would have even been considered for this opportunity," Berich remarked.

The Bermuda grass on Stockton's field was sourced from Tuckahoe Turf Farms in Hammonton, which also supplies Lincoln Financial Field and FIFA, ensuring a seamless transition for the Brazilian team.

All training sessions will be closed to the public, with temporary fencing installed around the stadium to enhance security for both players and the field.

"We have a history of hosting significant events and soccer teams, and this is another exciting occasion that we eagerly anticipate," Haines added.

Stockton previously hosted Saudi Arabia's national team in 1994 as they prepared for the World Cup and Nigeria in 1996 during their Olympic training camp, where Nigeria ultimately secured a gold medal.

As Stockton gears up for CR Flamengo's arrival on June 12, the team will train in Galloway Township until June 23. Officials are confident that the field and facilities will meet all expectations.

"This is a unique opportunity for us to be part of a global event like this," Berich concluded.
