Tiff Massey's "Baby Bling" Exhibit Secures Permanent Spot at Detroit Institute of Arts
Detroit artist Tiff Massey’s "Baby Bling" will find a lasting home at the Detroit Institute of Arts, following the success of her previous exhibition, "7 Mile + Livernois." This transition marks a significant milestone for both the artist and the museum.
The DIA emphasizes its dedication to amplifying contemporary voices from Detroit while broadening the narrative surrounding American art. "Baby Bling" stands as a testament to how modern artists can elevate everyday items into meaningful reflections on identity and community.
"This acquisition not only honors Massey's remarkable vision but also ensures that future generations will experience this powerful meditation on Black beauty and resilience within our permanent collection," stated Salvador Salort-Pons, director of the DIA.
The artwork intricately combines steel beads, woven rope, and brass to recreate "bobos," cherished childhood accessories for Black women and girls. This piece not only pays homage to cultural heritage but also revolutionizes perceptions of Black hair culture.

Massey expressed her sentiments about the acquisition: "Having 'Baby Bling' become part of the DIA's permanent collection feels like coming full circle. This is the museum where I first fell in love with art, and now my work will live alongside the pieces that shaped my artistic journey." She hopes that visitors will see their own reflections in this celebration of culture and identity.
Notably, Massey holds the distinction of being the youngest artist to have a solo exhibition at the DIA. The "7 Mile + Livernois" exhibit, which honors a prominent Black business and fashion district in Detroit, attracted over 220,000 visitors from May 2024 through May 2025.
"Baby Bling" is set to be showcased in the museum's newly reimagined Modern and Contemporary wing during its reopening in 2026, further solidifying its place in the narrative of contemporary art.
