Vikings Training Camp 2025: Key Players to Watch

Jul 21 2025

The Minnesota Vikings are set to convene in Eagan for their training camp, providing fans with an early glimpse of the 2025 roster dynamics.

Despite a disappointing end to last season, the Vikings showcased their potential as one of the league's top teams for much of the year. With a new quarterback at the helm, expectations remain high, bolstered by a revamped offensive line, strategic defensive acquisitions, and the return of a strong coaching staff.

For those attending camp or following from home, a list of players to monitor has been compiled, ranging from the obvious stars to lesser-known talents.

J.J. McCarthy, the second-year quarterback, is central to the Vikings' aspirations this season. He steps into a system that previously enabled Sam Darnold to throw 35 touchdowns. If McCarthy can replicate or exceed Darnold's performance, playoff contention is within reach. However, this is no small feat; Darnold's success often appeared almost serendipitous. The Vikings selected McCarthy with the 10th overall pick last year for a reason.

The last time fans witnessed McCarthy in action was during the 2024 preseason, where he delivered impressive touchdown passes alongside an unfortunate interception. Training camp will be crucial for assessing his growth since that outing. Head coach Kevin O'Connell has expressed unwavering confidence in McCarthy throughout the offseason. The upcoming practices will reveal whether that confidence is well-placed or merely hopeful.

Defensive end Turner had a rookie season that some might label underwhelming—three sacks from a 17th overall pick is not ideal. Yet, his situation was complicated; he played behind two standout pass rushers, Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel. Turner managed to show flashes of potential when given opportunities.

Having participated in only 28% of defensive snaps last season raises questions about his role moving forward. Will he secure a more significant position in the rotation? With defensive coordinator Brian Flores known for his innovative pressure schemes and limited depth behind the starters, training camp will shed light on Turner's future contributions.

Meanwhile, safety Jackson's new contract and Cam Bynum's exit via free agency indicate a larger role for him this season. Teaming up with Harrison Smith and Josh Metellus, Jackson will be pivotal in Flores' defensive strategy. Flores has expressed confidence in Jackson's readiness to step up.

"Theo's been great, and that's something we've been saying for two years," Flores noted earlier this offseason. "He’s improved his communication skills, techniques, fundamentals, disguises, and playmaking ability. He’s one of our hardest workers."

With minimal competition on the roster, Jackson is virtually assured a starting position. After years of contributing primarily on special teams and as a backup, how will he adapt to being a starter? Bynum's departure leaves significant expectations regarding both performance and team morale.

The cornerback position presents a notable concern for the Vikings this season. While standout Byron Murphy Jr. returns, uncertainty looms behind him. The team is banking on free agent Isaiah Rodgers, who has experience as a backup and spot starter with previous teams.

Blackmon, a former third-round pick, has been somewhat overlooked. He performed well during his rookie season but faced an ACL injury that derailed his sophomore campaign before it began. The Vikings need him to rebound effectively; their cornerback depth chart is filled with names but lacks proven talent. A resurgence from Blackmon could significantly bolster their secondary.

Lastly, undrafted receiver Bolden from Texas may not see much action on offense but could secure a spot as a return specialist. He ranked third nationally in punt return yards last season and scored five return touchdowns throughout his college career. Given the Vikings' struggles to find an effective returner last season, Bolden's potential explosiveness could make him a valuable asset if he performs well in camp.
