Youth Softball Championship Boosts Roseville's Economy
Nearly 40 elite 10U softball teams have taken over the fields at Maidu Regional Park this week, competing fiercely in the USA Softball Western "B" National Championship.
The impact of this tournament extends well beyond the playing fields, resonating through local hotels, restaurants, and shops throughout Placer County.
Placer Valley Tourism estimates that the event will generate over $1 million in economic activity, with around 2,500 athletes, coaches, and family members flocking to the area for the week.
"We may not have Tahoe or the snow or the lake... we're not San Francisco," remarked Kim Summers, CEO of Placer Valley Tourism. "We've had to carve out a niche in sports tourism, particularly youth sports tourism, and it's really paying off."
Organizers emphasize that strong community support and city partnerships are crucial to the event's success.
"The partnerships with the city are essential for bringing events like this here," stated Karla Burket, Junior Olympic Commissioner for USA Softball of Sacramento. "City staff and park workers play a vital role, along with local amenities like Top Golf and Sun Splash, ensuring visitors have plenty to do."
Among the notable teams is the Poway All Stars from near San Diego, who arrived in Roseville boasting an impressive 36-6 record after winning the USA Softball Southern California State Championship.
Players are relishing the experience. "It feels amazing because we're one of the teams that get to come here and most teams don't," expressed Danica Avila, a third baseman and shortstop for Poway.
"I'm just happy to be here with my team," added Kassidee Wallace, the team's catcher. "This is our last week together, and it's just a great feeling being here."
Families and coaches share in the excitement. "The best experience so far," said Head Coach Kaylie Wallace. "We got on the field and were ready to go β we didn't have that at State. Everything's really nice around here, so it's been a great experience."
As the tournament progresses, local leaders highlight that events like this are becoming integral to Roseville's tourism strategy, showcasing how youth sports can significantly benefit the economy.
The championship game is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. at Maidu Regional Park.
