Zack Wheeler's Start Delayed Amid Shoulder Concerns

Aug 06 2025

The Philadelphia Phillies announced a delay in Zack Wheeler's upcoming start, attributing the decision to reported stiffness in his right shoulder. Following an MRI that yielded no concerning results, manager Rob Thomson informed the media on Wednesday that Wheeler's next appearance on the mound will be pushed back by at least two days.

Originally slated to pitch in the series opener against the Texas Rangers on Friday, Wheeler is now expected to take the mound on Sunday instead. In his absence, Cristopher Sanchez, boasting a 10-3 record and a 2.40 ERA, will start Friday's game.

Wheeler, 35, faced a tough outing last Saturday, suffering a loss against the Detroit Tigers. He allowed three earned runs, all from home runs, while giving up nine hits over six innings, throwing a total of 98 pitches during the game.

Since July 1, Wheeler has struggled somewhat, yielding seven home runs across 32 2/3 innings with a 3.86 ERA over five starts. This contrasts sharply with his previous performance, where he allowed only ten home runs in 107 innings across his last 17 starts.

Currently, Wheeler holds a record of 9-5 with an impressive 2.64 ERA, ranking ninth among MLB pitchers. He leads the National League with 182 strikeouts in just 22 starts, trailing only Boston Red Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet for the overall MLB lead.

As Wheeler's situation unfolds, the Phillies aim to secure a three-game sweep against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon.
