Alex Rodriguez and Cynthia Rodriguez Discuss Marriage Breakdown Amid Affair Rumors
Alex Rodriguez and his ex-wife, Cynthia Rodriguez Nicolas, opened up about the turmoil that led to the end of their marriage, particularly focusing on allegations of infidelity. The couple, who married in 2002, faced significant challenges that came to light in the public eye.
In May 2007, photographs surfaced showing the former baseball star leaving a Toronto strip club with an unidentified blonde woman. At that time, Cynthia was at home caring for their first daughter, Natasha, born in November 2004.
“He seemed to be extremely apologetic and not proud of his actions,” Cynthia recounted during episode two of HBO’s docuseries, Alex vs ARod, set to premiere on November 13.
Fast forward to July 2008, shortly after the birth of their second daughter, Ella, and rumors began swirling about an alleged affair between Alex and pop icon Madonna, who was married to filmmaker Guy Ritchie at the time. “We were together for about a year and then I got pregnant with Ella,” Cynthia shared. “And then when Ella was first born, [there was] a very similar scenario.”
While neither party explicitly named Madonna, the series featured a New York Post headline that read, “A-Rod and Madonna Squeeze Play,” suggesting the affair rumors held some truth.

“At that point, we got divorced,” Cynthia stated plainly. Following the public revelation of the alleged affair, she filed for divorce, citing the marriage as “irretrievably broken” due to Alex’s extramarital activities and other misconduct.
The divorce petition claimed, “Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him.”
Reflecting on their relationship, Cynthia expressed her hopes for Alex to confront his personal issues. “I knew that he had his own demons and I was hoping he would get help,” she said. “I was hoping that it could end differently than it did.”
Despite the emotional turmoil, she noted a sense of liberation amidst the chaos. “He was really upset, so that affected me. But at the same time, I think I felt a sense of freedom.”
In the docuseries, Alex did not directly acknowledge infidelity but admitted shortcomings in his personal life. “In hindsight, I could have been a better husband. I could have been more present. I could have been more loyal,” he reflected.
Interestingly, Alex recalled how quickly he moved on after filing for divorce. “The day we filed for divorce, I think we were playing the Red Sox. On that day, I hit a home run,” he said. “Maybe baseball, the field is where I escape. I get to be the best version of myself. At least at that time.”
In the first episode of Alex vs ARod, released on November 6, Cynthia discussed how Alex’s intense focus on baseball created significant rifts in their relationship. “I felt sorry for him. I did,” she said. “He was a sweet guy. He had a really big heart. But he was so stunted when it came to the natural development of a person.”
The second episode of Alex vs ARod premieres Thursday, November 13, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
