Anthony Barr Retires After a Decade in the NFL
Linebacker Anthony Barr has officially retired from the NFL, concluding a decade-long career primarily with the Minnesota Vikings.
His last appearance on the field was in 2023. In a heartfelt Instagram post on Tuesday, Barr expressed gratitude, stating he is "incredibly thankful and deeply humbled by the journey this game has taken me on."
Drafted during the Mike Zimmer era, Barr quickly established himself as a versatile asset for the Vikings. His ability to rush the passer, drop into coverage, and execute blitzes made him a key player in Zimmer's defensive schemes.
Over his career, Barr earned four Pro Bowl selections, accumulating 18.5 sacks, five interceptions, and 496 solo tackles.
For eight seasons, he formed a formidable linebacking duo with Eric Kendricks, a fellow UCLA alum. In 2022, Barr signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent but returned to Minnesota midseason in 2023. His retirement announcement included thanks to the Vikings and other teams that supported him.
"Thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to represent your programs," Barr noted. "You gave me a platform to grow as a man, support my family, and live out my dreams. I'll forever carry the pride of these institutions with me."
Beyond football, Barr was dedicated to community service through his Raise the Barr foundation, which supports single parents in achieving their educational aspirations.
"For the past 25 years, football has been at the center of my life," he reflected. "I've dedicated myself fully to the game, and in return, it has given me more than I could've ever imagined—lifelong memories, unbreakable bonds, and a platform to grow, lead, and inspire."
