Athletics Surge Late with Homers for 8-2 Victory Over Guardians
In a decisive finish, Shea Langeliers, Jacob Wilson, and Nick Kurtz launched home runs in the final two innings, leading the Athletics to an 8-2 triumph over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night.
Luis Severino (3-11) secured the win after allowing just three hits over five innings, with the only blemish being a two-run homer from José Ramírez in the third inning. Remarkably, all of Severino's victories this season have come away from home.
Jack Perkins contributed significantly, striking out three batters across three scoreless innings, while Justin Sterner closed out the game in the ninth.
Nolan Jones managed a two-out single off Severino in the third, setting the stage for Ramírez's 19th home run, which gave the Guardians an early 2-0 lead. Historically, Ramírez has fared well against Severino, hitting four homers in 14 at-bats.
The Athletics responded in the fourth inning with a flurry of offense. Brent Rooker, Kurtz, and Langeliers hit consecutive doubles against Logan Allen (6-8), leveling the score. Miguel Andujar then added a single, marking a fourth straight hit for the A's and pushing them ahead 3-2.
Allen's performance included three runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Kurtz ignited the eighth inning with another double against Nic Enright, followed by Langeliers' 14th home run, extending the lead to 5-2.
Denzel Clarke tripled with one out in the ninth, falling just short of a cycle. Wilson then hit his 10th homer of the season, and Kurtz capped off the scoring with his 18th home run, leading all rookies.
Enright allowed two runs on three hits while retiring four batters. Kolby Allard was responsible for both ninth-inning homers.
Langeliers connected on a 0-2 pitch from Enright for an opposite-field homer to right, providing the A's with a comfortable three-run lead.
Despite this loss, Cleveland has dominated recent matchups, winning 20 of the last 25 encounters with the Athletics.
Looking ahead, Athletics LHP Jeffrey Springs (8-6, 3.93 ERA) is set to start Sunday against Guardians RHP Gavin Williams (5-4, 3.70).
