Attempted Theft at US Open: Fan Caught Near Jannik Sinner's Bag
A tennis fan attempted to pilfer an item from Jannik Sinner's bag during the 2025 US Open, an incident that unfolded shortly after Sinner's victory over Alexander Bublik on September 1.
As the world No. 1 paused to sign autographs for eager fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium, a man was recorded trying to unzip Sinner's racket bag, which was casually draped over his shoulder. The moment was captured in a video shared by Olly Tennis on social media.
Security personnel quickly intervened, thwarting the theft as Sinner, aware of the unfolding situation, made a hasty exit from the court.
“Every day, the quality of attendants at tennis tournaments seems to get worse,” remarked one viewer in response to the video. “Or is it just that people are getting worse everywhere?”
Another user added, “The US Open controversies just never end for this year.” This comment echoes sentiments from earlier in the tournament when Polish CEO Peter Szczerk was caught on camera taking a hat from a young fan, a gift from tennis player Kamil Majchrzak.
The incident involving Szczerk occurred on August 29 and quickly gained traction online, leading him to issue a public apology. He described his actions as “a grave mistake,” acknowledging that it appeared he had intentionally taken a souvenir from a child.

“Today I know that I did something that looked like I deliberately took a souvenir from a child,” Szczerk stated on his company’s Instagram account. “It wasn’t my intention, but that doesn’t change the fact that I hurt the boy and disappointed the fans.”
He further expressed regret, stating, “The cap was given to the boy, and an apology is due to the family. I hope that I have at least partially repaired the harm.” In a heartwarming turn, Majchrzak later met with the young fan and gifted him a new hat.
Szczerk, who runs a landscaping and pavement business in Poland, reflected on the incident as a lesson in humility. “This situation has shown me that one moment of inattention can undo years of work and support,” he said. “I will be even more actively involved in initiatives supporting children and young people and in actions against violence and hate. I believe that only through actions can I rebuild lost trust.”
As for Sinner, he is set to return to Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 3 for his quarterfinal match against Lorenzo Musetti.
