Blue Jays Sweep Giants 8-6, Match Franchise Record with 10th Home Win
Addison Barger launched a two-run homer, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer contributed with solo shots, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-6 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. This win completed a three-game sweep and marked the franchise's 10th consecutive home win, equaling a record set in 1985.
The Blue Jays' current home winning streak began after a four-game sweep of the Yankees from June 30 to July 3, allowing them to seize the AL East lead. Following that, they swept the Los Angeles Angels in another three-game series.
On Monday, the Blue Jays will face the Yankees again in Toronto for a new three-game series.
Since sweeping the San Diego Padres in late May, Toronto has dominated at home, winning 22 of their last 26 games.
Guerrero had a standout performance, reaching base three times and driving in two runs as the Blue Jays improved their July record to 12-3. This series sweep marked their eighth of the season.
Starting pitcher José Berríos (6-4) allowed four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings, securing his fourth win in six starts. Yariel Rodríguez closed the game for his second save in three opportunities.
Springer’s homer was his team-leading 17th of the season, while Barger recorded his 14th. Guerrero erased an early 1-0 deficit with a powerful 420-foot drive off Robbie Ray in the first inning, marking his 13th home run.
Ray (9-4) struggled, giving up five runs and five hits in just 4 1/3 innings, matching a season-high with five walks.
San Francisco's Matt Chapman contributed two hits, including a two-run homer, his 13th of the year.
Barger’s second-deck drive off Spencer Bivens in the fifth inning highlighted a four-run rally that started with Springer’s blast off former teammate Ray.
The Blue Jays have shown impressive power this season, boasting a 21-7 record when hitting two or more home runs in a game.
Looking ahead, Giants' RHP Hayden Birdsong (4-3, 4.11 ERA) is set to start against Braves RHP Bryce Elder (3-6, 5.65) on Monday. Meanwhile, Blue Jays' RHP Kevin Gausman (6-7, 4.19 ERA) will take the mound against Yankees LHP Carlos Rodon (10-6, 3.08).
